Leaving Taylor Behind

“Please don’t give up.” I heard as I was in a deep sleep. I instantly saw her face as she waited patiently for me to acknowledge her. I had no idea who she was until I was able to look into her eyes. She was tired and defeated. I felt the same. “Please tell my story. I need you to please tell my story.” She asked me and then she was gone. I went into the other room to pace around and ask myself why I had taken myself away from writing. Taylor’s ask had desperation that I could feel.

I decided I needed to know more, because the Taylor I wanted to write about has a lot of depth to her. Here innocence that led her into the wrong hands. Her faith that took her on this journey to help others. I went for a grounding walk that day and as I found myself standing in front of the statue of Mary, I asked her to help me. She directed me to look down. In front of me stood a pencil. The message was clear. Leaving Taylor Behind has to be written. Here is a short glimpse of her story.

 Three People on a Boat

Shula was not sure how to confront Bear about Mina. She was shaken up and upset that she told Shula what she does for him. It was a big risk for her to talk, but her bigger risk was staying alive. She could never leave on her own, she knew that. She thought she was dead either way. Mina had faith that Shula could help her. She knew that because she trusted Taylor’s promise to her.

Shula’s blood was boiling all day thinking about Mina shaking and in fear on this island. He understands now why Taylor’s work was so important. She was helping Mina and others escape. “Man, my sister was one brave soul sacrificing for everyone,” he said. He was still trying to understand how and why Taylor was involved with Bear at all. The pieces of this puzzle are getting closer.

Shula pulled the boat up to the marketplace and saw Rosie right away. She was always dressed up even in this dreadful time where most people hardly get out of their sweats. She is remarkable. Rosie waves down Shula from the dock and he signals her to come on board. She smiles as she skips through the crowd and makes her way to the boat in remarkable time. She holds onto her hat with one hand and her bag in the other. Roise in her rose color shirt. She is always a theme going on.

“How was the market today Rosie? Did you buy anything exciting today?” Shula asked.

“Oh no dear, I just like to walk around and check out all the people.” She said and looked out into the water. Shula was shocked by her words. He had no idea how she has food if she never buys anything at the market. There are not a lot of places to find food on this island. As much as he wanted to drift off into that thought he remembered again that he was mad with Bear and still needed a strategy to approach him.

“Shula, you look distracted. Is everything alright? Are you sure it is ok to take me home?” She asked, concerned. “I am good Rosie, thank you for asking. All is good. I enjoy riding with you. You are very comforting.” Shula replied with a reassuring side hug and grabbed her hand to give it a squeeze. They went on their way.

Shula continued to look back as they pushed off the dock to see if Bear was lurking. After reaching out into the main waterway, he saw him appear. Bear knew that Shula was looking for him. Shula returned to focus on the path in front of him. Rosie was itching to start a conversation. “Shula, I haven’t seen you with Mina lately. How is she doing?” She asked almost as if she was probing for information.

“Yeah, she has been laying low for the past few days. I think she just needs a little break. I mean, I may be a bit too much to take. Right?” he said, trying to get Rosie to smile. “Well, I hope that she is careful. I don’t like how Bear looks at her.” The probing was for sure the right reaction. Shula felt every second of it.

“I didn’t know that you knew Bear?” He asked without looking at her, but he had to turn around to steer the boat. She was right in his view and had no problem looking him in the eye. “I know Bear. You can’t live on this island without knowing Bear. Be careful of him. I warned your sister the same thing. I know that she had an affair with him.”

“What? Bear had an affair with my sister?” Shula screamed in anger.

“Shula! Please, please. I am sorry to upset you. Be careful of how you talk about him. He is dangerous. Don’t be fooled by his charm. He is ALWAYS listening or has someone listening for him.  “How do you????”, she stopped him in his tracks and came straight in for an answer.

“Shula, I know. How is not important. Just know that she did her best to save Mina and the other girls. But she had to leave or she would have been killed. She did the right thing.” Shula looked at Rosie with astonishment, but before he could react Bear was on the next dock as they took the turn back home. He waved them down, he was obligated to go, Rosie gave him the nod. She understood, Shula was deeper than he realized.

“Hi Bear.” Shula said with no emotion in his greeting. “Well hello, Shula. Thanks for stopping.” Bear replied. Rosie moved over for Bear to get in and have a seat.  “Shula, can you drop me off at the restaurant? You don’t mind right?” Bear asked knowing Shula didn’t have a choice and the sarcasm would upset him. “Yeah, of course. I got you.” Shula responded. He couldn’t look at Rosie, she remained silent.

“Mina is working tonight. Maybe you can come by? I am sure she could use your company.” Bear said wanting to get a reaction from Shula. “Yeah, maybe. I have to see what my family wants to do tonight.”

“Wow, a man that picks his family over his girlfriend. That is a statement.” Bear said with a laugh as he picks at his fingers and reaches into his shirt pocket grabbing his cigar for the ride. He leans back and lites the cigar and takes his first puff.

“Ah, what a great day for a ride.” Bear remarks and no one responds. As they come closer to the restaurant, Shula can see a woman standing there waiting between the supporting beam holding on to it in the open spaced bar looking straight into the sunset. She was dressed in all white. The wind blew through her long black straight hair and she was emotionless. Bear starts to point at her, in case Shula didn’t catch her painful grin.

“That’s her, that’s my favorite bartender. Tonight is our big white party Shula. So make sure you are dressed for it.” Bear smiled and took puffs of his cigar then started to clap for Mina as Shula docked up the boat in front of her. She waited for Bear to come up and Bear waved back to Shula smiling as Shula’s heart started racing and face became a bright red. Mina looked back at Shula with the same reaction until she was shuffled off by Bear inside and out of his view.

Shula was beyond upset and steamed back onto the boat letting the rope go with all the angry emotions stirring inside of him. Rosie watched intently until they were on their way. He rowed as fast as he could away from there.

“He knows how to get to you Shula, don’t let him. You know your playing field now. Be wise on your next move. Shula, you have to save her before she becomes another victim that mysteriously disappears from this island. Taylor is still out there too Shula. I know that you can save them.” Rosie said as she moved back from whispering in his ear with this message. Shula  listened and closed his eyes as the wind came through him and the sunset was guiding the path.

“I want nothing more than to save them from that man.” Shula said as the adult he wanted to be and not the young boy living with his parents reliving his sister's pain on this island. Shula found the mission they came here for.
